Before You Pitch

10 Questions to Answer Before You Pitch

Every pitch is a promise. Before you walk into that room, make sure you can keep it.

01

What Is It?

Can you explain the format, genre and premise clearly in one or two sentences? If you cannot describe the project precisely, it is not ready to pitch.

02

What Is the Story?

Who is the protagonist, what do they want, what stands in their way, how does the pressure escalate and what is at stake? If you get lost recounting plot, the story is not yet clear enough.

03

Why Should We Care?

What is the emotional engine that makes an audience invest in the outcome? What should they feel, and why should they care what happens?

04

Why This World?

What makes this setting, environment or arena integral to the story? How does it create pressure, conflict or reveal character?

05

Who Is It For?

Who is the audience for this project, and why will it appeal to them? Be specific. "Everyone" is not an audience.

06

Where Does It Sit in the Market?

What are the most relevant comparables? Use them to establish the project's tone, audience, likely scale and market position.

07

Why Now?

Is there a cultural, social, commercial or audience reason this project belongs in the present market? What makes this the right moment for this story?

08

Why You?

What experience, expertise, access, perspective or personal connection makes you particularly equipped to tell this story? Why should this project come from you?

09

Where Is the Project Now?

What actually exists today: screenplay, treatment, rights, producer, attachments or finance? State the project's current position precisely and without inflation.

10

What Are You Asking For?

What do you need: a producer, option or acquisition, development or production finance, coproducer, commissioner, sales agent or distributor? Make the ask specific and unambiguous.
